Chief GLONASS builder fired amid corruption scandal

The Russian military industrial commission, headed by deputy PM Dmitry Rogozin, has fired Yuri Urlichich from his post of chief builder of the GLONASS system, Rogozin's spokeswoman, Lidia Mikhailova, announced on Sunday.
She said that Rogozin fired Urlichich from his post, but he still remains the Director General of the company.
GLONASS is a radio-based satellite navigation system and has become one of the major projects of Russian space sphere throughout the past decade. The system is a competitor to the American GPS and the European GLOSPACE systems. The company that manages the budget for GLONASS is the Russian space agency
Last Friday Russian police announced major corruption deal within the RSS. Some 6.5 billion rubles were reported to have been embezzled from the budget intended for GLONASS development.
Investigators claim that the RSS management signed contracts with private companies to implement projects, but in reality they themselves did the job and got the money. No names have been released by the investigators yet.
The embezzled money is 5.6% of the total financing of 116.9 billion rubles. The new GLONASS development program includes more 300 billion rubles to be implemented into the system by 2020.
