A former federal judge in the Rostov district court in the city of Rostov-on-Don has been found dead, the local prosecutor's office reported on Wednesday.
According to investigators, the body of the ex-judge was found at 9pm near a residential house on Telmana street. The body had gunshots wounds to the head.
The prosecutor's office said that the former judge had retired several years ago.
"Nevertheless, we are looking into relating the murder to the professional activity of the judge during her work in the court," the prosecutor's office spokesman Valeriy Chekryshev said.
In August 2012 six district courts of Rostov-on-Don and the Rostov region received e-mails from unknown people who wrote that they would kill judges and their relatives, including children, if they are engaged in criminal activities.
The author of the e-mails said they would kill the judges for "passing illegal verdicts."
The author wrote that they would kill judges at any time of the day "with guns." The judges were also threatened with the "arson and destruction of their property."
