Moscow's Tverskoy Court has granted a motion to arrest Alexander Maximov, who on Sunday ran his car into ten people at a bus stop, seven of whom died, reports "Interfax" via the press service of the Ministry of Interior of Russia.

"Tverskoy court granted investigators the right to arrest the driver," the press service said.

A criminal case under Article 264 of the Russian Criminal Code (traffic violation resulting in the death of two or more persons) has already been opened.

"According to preliminary data, the victims included two teenage girls, 14 and 15 years old, a young man aged 16 years and another teenager, whose age has not yet been established," reports an "Interfax" source in Emergency Services headquarters. The accident happened on Saturday afternoon. The drunk driver of a Toyota was driving at 200 km/h, lost control, and crashed into a bus stop killing seven and injuring three. A few hours after the accident the driver could barely stand and tred to escape from the police who were escorting him. He also threatened to break the camera.

When asked how much he drank before getting behind the wheel, Maximov said he had been drunk for two days and he should "kill himself."

According to police, Maximov has already faced five administrative fines.

The Kremlin has recently supported the idea of toughening punishments for driving under the influence, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of the President of Russia, told RIA "Novosti."

"The events of recent weeks confirm the need for discussion and adoption of more stringent measures," said Peskov.

Earlier, the "United Russia" party said they will amend legislation to toughen the punishments for drunk driving this week. Afterwards, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev offered to "discuss" the possibility of tougher punishments for traffic accidents committed while drunk.
