The feminist agit-prop punk group Pussy Riot
The video was shown during the MTV Video Music Awards ceremony in Los Angeles.
On August 17 three members of Pussy Riot punk feminist group were sentenced to 2 years for hooliganism motivated by religious hatred after they performed a "Punk prayer" in Christ the Savior cathedral in Moscow on February 21 and released an edit video of the event, cutting in performances in other venues. Nadezhda Tollokonnikova, Ekaterina Samutsevich and Maria Alekhina were arrested in March and spent five months in jail awaiting trial. They have appealed their sentence in Moscow City Court. Many artists, politicians and human rights watchdogs have declared their support for the group and condemned the excessively harsh sentence of Khamovniki district court in Moscow.
Another two members of the group who took part in the performance reportedly fled the country, fearing prosecution.
