The former Astrakhan mayor candidate Oleg Shein, who has been holding a hunger strike since March 16 to protest against the mayor's vote results, and the Central Election commission head Vladimir Churov watched videos from voting stations across Astrakhan on Tuesday night.
The closed screening started at 20.00 Moscow time on Monday and lasted until 6 o'clock in the morning Tuesday.
Shein held a press-conference in Moscow on Tuesday and said that they had watched some 42 videos from more than 200 voting stations. The half of them showed the vote rigging which Shein was seeking to prove to Churov.
Shein also thanked PM Vladimir Putin for his initiative to equip voting stations with web cameras, saying that critics of the idea were wrong.
The video watching will continue today, however Shein would be absent as he intends to go back to Astrakhan. His supporter Sergey Chaplygin, who is also on the hunger strike, will watch the videos in Shein's place.
Shein did not directly speak of Vladimir Churov's reaction to the videos, however he mentioned that Churov's decision to continue watching
"says a lot."
United Russia party representative Vyacheslav Lysakov, who also watched videos, was not impressed.
"I cannot make final conclusions, but I do not think these violations could influence the final result of the vote in any way," Lysakov said.
He also mentioned that the elections results in Astrakhan could only be cancelled by the court, and only if it finds violations at 25% of the voting stations. "I doubt that there were so many violations," Lysakov said.
During the viewing, Oleg Shein felt sick. Churov called doctors who gave him a glucose injection.
Oleg Shein lost the mayoral election in Astrakhan to United Russia candidate Mikhail Stolyarov. Shein claims the vote was completely rigged. He started a hunger strike on March 16 and has refused to eat until the vote results are annulled.
