The head of the Emergency Ministry, Sergey Shoigu, was elected as a new Moscow region governor on Thursday. All 46 deputies of the Moscow regional Duma voted for Shoigu's appointment. In his program speech before the regional parliament, the governor-elect stressed his priorities. "I will do everything possible to justify the trust of the Moscow region residents," he said.

The deputies had one question for him concerning the fight against corruption. "We cannot tolerate corruption. I think it will no longer exist," Shoigu replied.
"I hope that Moscow region will live better and happier," he added.

"My first step as governor will be my inauguration on May 11. Then I will get acquainted with the elected mayors and with all acting ministers," Shoigu shared his plans with journalists. While answering whether he regrets leaving the Emergency ministry, Shoigu sighed and replied: "it is a pity, of course. I am a normal person. It is a pity. It is if you raise a daughter for 20 years then she marries."

The forthcoming resignation of the outgoing Moscow region governor Boris Gromov has been widely discussed lately. Experts start to talk of a power change in the region every time the authorities get into new scandals. Among the main problems in the Moscow region are such issues as the building of a highway through the Khimki forest, attacks on journalists, and numerous high-profile corruption scandals.

The United Russia party offered Dmitry Medvedev three candidates for the gubernatorial post, including Shoigu, the first deputy chair of the regional government Igor Parkhomenko, and the mayor of Reutov, Alexander Khodyrev. Almost no one doubted that Shoigu would be elected.

Sergey Shoigu has been heading the Emergency Ministry since 1991. According to polls, he was the most popular Russian minister.
