The audience at Bolshoi theater booed an elderly bearded person in an Imperial box after a performance of Rodion Schedrin's opera "Dead Souls". Members of public thought the person was Vladimir Churov, chairnman of Central Election Commission, who the opposition holds at least partly responsible for alleged election fraud and ruling United Russia party victory. People shouted offensive slogans and compared Churov to Chichikov, the opera protagonist, a trickster and a fraud.
The problem is, Churov wasn't in the box. People mistook famous Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki for the Russian election controller. Penderecki was the Golden Mask festival's guest and he was a bit surprised with this reaction.
Golden mask festival's spokeswoman Maria Beilina confirmed the public mistook Penderecki for Churov.
